Katy Perry Calls Out High School Crush On Stage

Pop star Katy Perry lived out a little bit of every high school girl’s fantasy on Tuesday when she returned to her alma mater, Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, California (which she attended her freshman year before earning her GED) for a homecoming concert.


Not only was Perry returning to her high school the conquering hero, she got to put the one boy who never noticed her in high school on the hot seat while she was at it. Perry recognized Shane Lopes, former high school football star turned high school football coach, in the crowd and pointed him out.


“Is that Shane Lopes? You were the most popular kid in my class, but you never wanted to date me, it was always Amanda Wayne.” As the crowd laughed and cheered, she added, “Oh yeah, you really chose right, honey. What’s up now, playa?”


Perry proceeded to dedicate her next song to Lopes and even tweak the lyrics to include his name. She brought her high school moment to an end by pointing to her engagement ring and saying “That’s cool, I got mine,” and blowing her former crush a kiss. 


 The “mine” she’s refering to would be British comedian Russell Brand, to whom she is engaged.


Lopes remembers their high school relationship a little differently. He told Radar Online that the story was, “pretty fabricated. I never got the feeling that she had a crush on me. We’ve always been friends. I think it was more for entertainment and she was figuring out a way to segue into her next song and kinda embarrass me just for fun.”


Lopes isn’t taking it personally though. He told TMZ that he married his high school sweetheart and is happy with how life turned out. He was more amused by being called out on stage than hurt. ”I haven’t seen her in awhile.” He told TMZ. ”I just know her as Katy Hudson so to see her as the famous Katy Perry is kinda hilarious!”
